Guest Dvar Torah this week & New Class Opportunities

Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah

Dear Friends,

We are excited to share a number of upcoming learning opportunities for the Beth Sholom community!

First, please join us tomorrow afternoon (11/13) at 4:15 PM for a special Dvar Torah from Beth Sholom member Rochelle Sobel. The title of the Dvar Torah is “On the Honey and the Sting” (Al Hadvash v’al Haoketz). (will take place on Zoom, password 613613)

Second, this Saturday night (11/14) at 7:30 PM join Yael Grunfeld as she shares about the Ethiopian Jewish community and their unique Sigd holiday (which takes place this Sunday). You can join on Zoom, password 613613.

Finally, please see below for our full lineup of classes for November-January. In addition to our current offerings which will continue, we are looking forward to a number of new learning opportunities. We will also be restarting some of our WhatsApp learning groups.

NEW CLASSES - SPECIAL SERIES

Women's Torah Learning with Rabbanit Fruchter and Maharat Intern Emily Goldberg Winer: Join us for a special weekly series on themes related to Chanukah. Wednesdays at 12:45 PM- Starting November 18th

A Jewish Approach to the Current Racial and Civil Discord with Rabbi Antine. 8:00 PM on November 17, 24, December 1, December 8
This class will view many of the following contentious issues through the lens of Jewish Thought and Halacha:

Is there a Halachic duty to support communities that have been discriminated against?
Reparations/Affirmative Action
Policing - Role of Police, Police Brutality and Accountability
Is protest permissible? What about civil disobedience? Is destruction of property and/or violence ever permitted according to Halacha?

Jewish Foundations with Rabbi Cooper
This class is for those who want to explore some of the most foundational aspects of observant Jewish life.

At 8:00 PM on the Following Dates:

December 3 - Navigating the Siddur
December 10 - Keeping Kosher FAQ
December 17 - Shabbat FAQ
January 7 - Torah Study: A “How-To”

WHATSAPP GROUPS

Daily Halacha: In this group, Rabbi Antine and Rabbi Cooper will post a 60-90 second recording of the daily halacha that was shared that day in minyan. Click here to join.

One Verse at a Time: In this group, brief messages are sent out by Rabbi Cooper 2-3 times per week, all exploring one specific verse from the week's Torah portion. This is a great way to "zoom in" on the Torah portion of the week, through an ultra-close reading. Click here to join.

Would you like to learn a specific topic or have a specific question you would like to learn more about? Rabbi Antine, Rabbi Cooper, and our Maharat Intern Emily Goldberg Winer are all available to meet! Please email clergy@bethsholom.org to set up a chevruta with one of them.
