MEMBERSHIP

WELCOME:   We are pleased that you are interested in Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah. You are cordially invited to join us at services, held daily, Shabbat and Holidays.   We hope that you will visit our Synagogue, see our facilities and chat with our members and staff.   Beth Sholom Congregation founded in 1908, the largest Modern Orthodox Congregation in the Washington Metropolitan area, has facilities in Silver Spring and Potomac, Maryland. We are affiliated with the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. Our membership consists of approximately 500 families.

WHO ARE OUR MEMBERS?   Any Jewish person, eighteen years or older, may become a member. The unit of membership is the individual, or in the case of married persons, the couple.

HOW IS OUR CONGREGATION SUPPORTED? Beth Sholom is a non-profit Congregation belonging to its membership. The necessary funding for its operations comes from membership. The officers and members of the Board, who are elected at an annual meeting, conduct the business affairs of the Congregation. Through careful planning and review, the costs of operation are held to a minimum and are comparable to similar costs of other congregations. The primary source of funding for the Shul's programs is the dues contributed by members.   We have two types of membership: Family - $1,415 - Individual -$710.   There is an assessment of $4000 for families and $2000 for individual memberships which may be paid over a period of 5 years. All members have the same rights and responsibilities. There are no partial or associate memberships. The membership year begins July 1; however, the membership dues are prorated depending upon when you join.   Membership entitles you to reduced rates on usage of our Congregation's facilities, High Holiday seats and the Hebrew School and Pre-School programs.

WHY BETH SHOLOM CONGREGATION? The Congregation strives to serve Yiddishkeit and Shul members through religious services, Jewish education for children and adults, social and cultural activities, and special experiences for all ages. Members often celebrate special life cycle events with an Aliyah, Haftorah and/or Kiddush on Shabbat.

WHO ARE OUR STAFF? Our staff consists of a Rabbi, Assistant Rabbis/Director of Adult and Youth Education, Executive Director, Pre-School Director, Office Administrator, clerical staff, and maintenance personnel. Our staff, together with involved and committed members of the Congregation, works to promote the totality of Jewish values and Jewish experience through personal service to members and through activities within the greater Jewish community.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MEMBER?  We invite you to make Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah your religious and social  home and become a part of our congregation’s family. We sincerely hope that you will choose to become a member of our Shul family.  By joining our warm and friendly Orthodox community, you will quickly realize we are the premiere synagogue where all are truly welcome. You will greatly benefit from our Innovative Early Childhood Center, Comprehensive Religious School; Dynamic Youth Programs; Stimulating Adult Classes; Inspirational Religious Services for all Knowledge Levels; and Magnificent Sanctuaries and Social Halls.  Please complete the enclosed membership application and return it to the Shul office.
