OUR BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM

Our special Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, which we refer to as the Mechinah Program prepares each student for the transition to Jewish adult responsibilities. Each student has the opportunity to challenge traditional approaches to education and seek knowledge in alternative ways. We believe this program allows the Bar/Bat Mitzvah event to become a stepping stone for our students.

A highlight of the program is the tremendous amount of flexibility and individualization which enables our young women to have a personally fulfilling and rewarding experience. The Bat Mitzvah student can, among other things

  • deliver a speech to the congregation on Shabbat morning
  • chant a selection from the Book of Prophets or writing from the Tanach (Bible)
  • sing any number of prayers from the Siddur
  • create art projects or perform musical renditions

This freedom of creativity gives the young woman a maximum choice to select the Judaic content that is most meaningful to her.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah student has 13 objectives of Jewish importance to fulfill prior to their important day. The student goes through a process of looking in-ward toward:

  • themselves,
  • their family
  • their ancestors

and then turn outward toward:

  • their hebrew school
  • their synagogue
  • the Jewish community
  • and the Jewish people

This program is funded by a grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
